This formula treats liver-gallbladder damp heat obstruction in the right lateral costal region. Attendent symptoms may include bitter taste, irritability, flank pain and belching.
Therapeutic Functions
Clears damp heat, courses the liver, rectifies central burner qi and relieves pain.*
Clinical Indications
This formula is applied to acute inflammation of the gallbladder or bile duct. If gallbladder stones are suspected the formula is usually combined with herbs to dissolve stones. Further, since often this pattern presents with stomach upset (wood invading earth) it can be easily misdiagnosed as acute gastritis.
Symptoms & Signs
The patient presents with pain in the right costal region (spontaneous or upon palpation), bitter taste, constipation, scant dark urine, vomiting, stomach pain, lack of appetite and headache.
Precautions
Use cautiously in pregnant women.
Pulse Quality
Rapid and slippery.
Tongue Appearance
Red with yellow fur.
