TCM Pattern

Treats water-path disorders that give rise to accumulation of fluids in the stomach and abdomen, diarrhea, vomiting of clear or frothy fluids, dizziness or cough. These symptoms can occur as the result of an external pathogen or from and internal disharmony. Inhibited urination is a key symptom as it is a direct result of lack of free flow through the water path.

Therapeutic Functions

Disinhibits water, dispels damp, drains heat and resolves the exterior.*

Clinical Indications

Treat an array of disorders that fall into the biomedical categories of acute or chronic nephritis, edema, inhibited urination, acute gastritis or enteritis, stomach prolapse, gastrectasis, or urogenital inflammation or infection.

Symptoms & Signs

There are three distinct presentations for which this formula is employed. 1. External patterns that disrupt the body’s water metabolism. 2. Internal accumulation of water-damp with symptoms such as diarrhea or sudden turmoil (vomiting and diarrhea). 3. Collection of phlegm-rheum in the lower abdomen, with vomiting of frothy saliva, dizziness, shortness of breath and cough.

Precautions

This formula treats pathogenic accumulations of fluids owing to disruption of the water path. It is not intended for long-term use without combination with agents to supplement the spleen and kidney. Though it can address thirst related to blockage in the water path, it is not suitable for thirst related to heat excess or yin vacuity.

Pulse Quality

Floating, soggy or slippery.

Tongue Appearance

Pale with a white fur.
