This formula addresses kidney and liver yin vacuity patterns that present with dizziness, blurred vision, hearing loss, tinnitis, night sweats or pain and weakness in the lower back or knees. Other yin-vacuity signs such as steaming-bone tidal fevers, dry mouth, thirst or heat in the palms and soles may also be indications of the appropriateness of this formula.

Clinical Indications
Genitourinary disorders, prostate disorders, weakness and aching in the lower back and knees, hearing loss, tinnitis, urinary tract infections, diabetes, hypertension, perimenopausal syndrome, dysfunctional uterine bleeding, glaucoma, chronic hepatitis and delayed development.
Symptoms & Signs
The patient for whom this formula is suited should display symptoms of yin vacuity including thirst, dryness, dizziness and symptoms that worsen in the nighttime such as night sweating.
Precautions
The cloying nature of the Shu Di Huang in this formula suggests that it not be given to those with weak spleen qi.
