Clinical Indications

Common cold with lingering fever after several days, influenza, malaria, lymphadenitis, epidemic parotitis, acute rheumatic fever, acute and chronic bronchitis, upper respiratory tract infection, tuberculosis, pleuritis, pneumonia, sinusitis, gastritis, gastric ulcer, stomach ache, childhood diarrhea, chronic constipation, renal colic, acute pyelonephritis, acute viral and chronic hepatitis, gallstones, jaundice, mastitis, postpartum fever, severe chills and fever due to uterine disease, mental instability in children, torticollis, intercostal neuralgia, epilepsy, neurosis, alopecia, tonsillitis, otitis media, and impotence in young men. The formula is also used for women's common cold contracted during childbirth or menstruation.

Symptoms & Signs

Alternating fever and chills, diminished appetite, dry throat, chest and lateral costal region fullness, dizziness, difficulty taking in deep breaths, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, bitter or sour taste in the mouth, jaundice, irritability.

Precautions

This formula has an ascending action, so it should not be used for patients with repletion above and vacuity below, liver fire, or bleeding gums. Use cautiously with patients with ascendency of liver yang, hypertension, vomiting of blood due to yin vacuity, headache or dizziness.
